Persephone the maiden: Healing from trauma and loss and awakening vitality and joy

Spring represents the return of Persephone to Earth. This is when Persephone embodies her maiden form. Persephone as an archetype represents both the Maiden and the Underworld Goddess. She holds lightness and darkness, hope and pain, pleasure and loss.

The maiden archetype is connected with our youthfulness, innocence, playfulness, and vitality. When we embody our maiden energy, we can experience deep levels of creativity, openness, and wonder. Persephone, before her abduction to the underworld, loved to connect with the flowers and the earth. She felt free. She experienced safety. Safety to be who she was. Safety to be in her body. Freedom to experience pure joy and sacred connection with the earth.

When we have gone through trauma and loss, we can feel thrust into the symbolic underworld, like Persephone. We can grieve that loss of innocence. That loss of hope. That loss of vitality that we used to experience before the realization of the harshness of the world and betrayal from that safety that we once trusted.

Our spirits feel broken. We crave a return to who we were before. Before we were impacted by the wounds of life, before sex became associated with trauma, before we lost our sense of innocence and vitality.

The Maiden aspect of Persephone shows us that we can again feel joy, passion, vitality and pleasure. This is not by pushing away the trauma or by ignoring the pain, but instead holding our trauma with compassion and honoring our unique healing journey. It is by rejecting a pathologization of our hurt, sexuality, or sensitivity. It is by deeply knowing that we can return from the underworld transformed, awakened, and whole; just like Persephone.

When the maiden aspect of Persephone is honored, we can connect with sexuality with a new sense of wonder, we can connect with our bodies with compassion, and we can rediscover our wisdom and playfulness. We start to fully realize our own worth, our own resilience, and our own capacity to straddle the realms of the underworld and the joy and pleasure of life.

Here are some prompts to support you in connecting with your inner maiden aspect of the Persephone archetype:

Explore playful sexual energy: When was the last time that you got to really play with your sexuality? Whether it was exploring new ways of touching your body, finding new rhythms with your partner, or exploring sensual dance and movement. The maiden energy is all about play, vitality, and discovery. Exploring what this energy feels like in your body through sensuality and sexuality practices can be a powerful experience.

Connect with nature, particularly flowers and blooming plants: The symbolism of plants and flowers blooming is connected with the sense of growth, opening, and life. This is a core aspect of maiden energy. Explore what you feel like in your body as you are in nature. Explore all of your senses as you sit with the plants and flowers. What do you notice? What parts of you come alive?

Reflect on what awakens your sense of wonder, passion, and curiosity: Are there parts of your life that make you feel stagnant? Whether it is your career, relationship, or sexuality. If so, connect with what helps you to awaken your energy and your sense of meaning and connection. Are there ways that you can feel more grounded in these areas? Are there shifts that you need to make in how you relate to these parts of your life?

Explore the maiden shadow: Like all archetypes, the maiden has a shadow side. The maiden can be associated with feeling disempowered, naive, and lost. We often see the maiden archetype needing to be rescued in myths and fairytales. When we are in the shadow aspect of the maiden, we can feel lost. We can feel like we want someone to jump in and give us the answers or save us. This can ultimately lead to living a life that feels stagnant and can disconnect us from our own inherent wisdom and strength. Explore if there are any areas of your life that you are playing out the shadow aspect of the maiden.
