What is sex therapy?

What is sex therapy?

Sex therapy is a form of psychotherapy that specializes in addressing sexual concerns such as pain during sex, erectile disorder, low desire, or difficulty orgasming. Sex therapy can also help individuals and couples increase sexual and relationship satisfaction.

In order to become an AASECT Certified Sex Therapist, therapists receive extensive training, education, and supervision around sex therapy practices, ethics, and approaches.

What happens in sex therapy?

In the first few sessions of sex therapy, you and your sex therapist might talk about your sexual and relationship history, concerns, and your hopes and goals for therapy.

As sessions continue, your sex therapist may recommend specific exercises between meetings. These could include worksheets, sensate focus, mindfulness exercises, connecting practices with your partner, or journaling.

Sex therapy may incorporate couples therapy, cognitive behavioral therapy, education, mindfulness, and trauma focused therapy skills to address your specific goals for therapy.

What can sex therapy help with?

Sex therapy can help with specific concerns like delayed ejaculation, erectile disorder, low desire, difficulty orgasming, or pain during sex. Sex therapy can also address experiences and internalized messages that may be impacting your relationship to your sensuality such as past trauma, body image, or shame.

Sometimes people seek sex therapy because they want to deepen their sexual connection with their partner, find their authentic sexuality, or explore new aspects of themselves.
