Introduction to archetypes: Authentic living and sensual embodiment

It can be hard to face our pain, our shame, our desires, and to learn to embrace our true self. Whether it was from our families, past traumas, or society, we have been taught how we “should” be, what parts of us are deemed unacceptable, and what parts of us are safe to share. These internalized messages contribute to developing a shadow; the parts of us that we judge, push away, or repress. Exploring our shadows and archetypes can help us to look at ourselves with more openness, curiosity, and compassion. It can help us to feel more whole, authentic, and embodied.

Archetypes are universal symbols, energies, and patterns that have been core aspects of the human experience throughout history. Archetypes show up in literature, myths, stories, films, and fantasies. Common archetypes include the hero, the lover, the trickster, and the mother. Through archetypal exploration, we can be more mindful of our patterns and dynamics. We can develop a deeper sense of authenticity and live life with more fullness.

In the upcoming weeks and months, I will be sharing a series of articles about specific archetypes and myths. Through exploring these archetypes and myths, you will be supported in embracing your authentic self, integrating your shadow, and honoring your sensuality and sexuality from a place of empowerment, wholeness, and compassion.

To begin your archetypal journey, you can reflect or journal on the following questions:

How do you view yourself? What is your identity?

How do you relate to others?

What parts of you do you feel shame around or do you not share with others?

What aspects of other people’s personalities give you a strong reaction?

What are you drawn to in others?

How do you express yourself sexually?

How do you wish you could express yourself sexually?

Are there any parts of you that you feel afraid to express sexually?

As you reflect on these questions, it can be helpful to check in with yourself emotionally and physically. Do you notice any sensations or emotions coming up? If so, take time to explore these and to be curious about what you experience. Archetypal and shadow exploration can bring up past memories, emotions, and uncomfortable truths. Integrating this with self-compassion and embodiment is part of this process to self-acceptance and authentic living.
